1-2-3 Sundays: Jetlag, Norovirus & Personal Space
1 Theme
One Day At A Time
This week has been taken one day at a time.
From travelling home to getting back to work, I've been taking each day as it comes this week.
I've been getting into my normal routine where possible but also not feeling guilty if I find it hard or miss something out.
I haven't trained since I've got back - my body just hasn't felt up to it.
I can still train mentally so I've made my focus each day to prioritise my meditation (15 minutes per day).
Shifting my focus of 'training' elsewhere has meant I progress in other areas which are often put on autopilot.
It's important to plan out your week so you know where everything fits and be prepared for what's to come. Sometimes, however, you have to let your guard slip and roll with the punches a little.
Get to the end of the week and reassess. Then you can catch your breath. That's been my thinking this week.
Getting back into the routine of going to work was going to be difficult - I knew that. It always is after time off.
Which is why I focused on each day individually - what can I do today to make this a success.
Not as much big picture thinking happened this week. It was about settling back in to be primed and ready to go as close to 100% come Monday.
2 Positive Outcomes
Greenery
After spending a lot of time surrounded by massive buildings, it was refreshing to be able to walk surrounded by the natural environment.
No longer do I have the feeling of being swallowed up by the buildings. I can be in open spaces and feel the air and sun properly.
My lunchtime walk at work looks over the River Clyde and hills on the opposite side.
It's a momentary rest bite from the issues of work.
Some good tunes and fresh air helps reset my brain for the afternoon.
Personal Space
I had an amazing time in New York - seeing the sights, spending time with family and eating nice food.
A criticism I have of very large cities is the lack of your own space.
Now I get these cities are designed to maximise what you can do in the minimal space you have - that's why they build upwards - but at times it can feel very restrictive.
It also isn't ideal for the mind.
It makes me very grateful to be back home and be able to move around my home with ease and not worry about trampling over furniture.
It keeps the mind open and at rest.
3 Things I've Learned
Jetlag + Norovirus = Disaster
I got back from New York on Tuesday afternoon. I knew I was going to experience jetlag - especially since we had a connecting flight from Paris.
The flight to Paris was the worst of my life.
I started to get a sore stomach suddenly on the way to the airport. I got something to eat and water in after security and felt a bit better.
The flight took off and after an hour I woke from my snoozing with a feeling of dread.
I was going to be sick.
It's the first time I've been sick on a plane.
The second time was an hour later. Great.
Luckily, that was the last of it.
Getting home tired and unwell from the sickness was not fun. I had Wednesday off work to recover from the anticipated jetlag. I was now recovering from Norovirus too.
One In, One Out
I bought some new clothes over in the States. T0 make sure I don't have too many clothes, I'm going to use a 'one in, one out' philosophy.
Whenever one new piece of clothing comes in, another one must go out.
This will prevent me from having too many unwanted clothes.
It also makes sure you keep the number of clothes you own to a minimum.
Too many options to choose from makes decision making harder - think of a restaurant with a massive menu.
I always donate old clothes where possible as there could be someone who could benefit from what you no longer need.
Don't Rush Back
I had initially planned to get back to training on Friday.
Instead, I'm waiting until Monday.
My body needs time to recover.
I don't want to run and tank my already depleted central nervous system.
Getting back to full health is more important than going for a gym session when you're clearly not ready.
