What I'm Thinking

I've been pondering over how to structure these blog posts recently.

My main problem recently has been adherence which I think is down to how I set them out.

Sometimes when there's something on my mind I think is worth sharing it's hard to get it to fit the framework.

One of my biggest lessons this year is you can't framework everything.

As an engineer, I naturally gravitate to the process and systems. Sometimes, I find it hard to be intuitive and deviate away from 'the process' - something I'm actively working on.

Frameworks provide comfort. They also let you know when you're not operating within defined parameters. When I think of it this way, it's dangerous.

You can't live your life in this way.

At some point, you have to take risks and move away from the 'ideal' that someone else has created for you.

2 Positive Outcomes

It's Hyrox Weekend!!!

A fair bit of juxtaposition from the last time out.

I'm not lounging on the beach the day before or eating tapas for dinner.

I originally didn't like the idea of competing on a Sunday at 6pm but it's allowed me to decompress from the working week. I'm going into tonight's race feeling in a great spot overall.

If you want to track myself and Kieran then you can see our live times here.

After going up to spectate on Saturday, I'm ready to go and race now.

There's an amazing fitness scene in Scotland.

The number of people at Hyrox showed this.

I met so many people on Saturday and it'll probably be the same again today.

Hyrox is still a growing sport and it was genuinely so good to see so many people challenging themselves.

A Great Conversation

Last week, I recorded another episode of the Client Hot Seat series with Ben Blundell.

He dives into his journey - especially the shifts in mindset he's had.

This is a must-listen for anyone wanting to change the way they think.

3 Learnings

Long and Slow

I'm much fitter going into this doubles race compared to Barcelona.

One of the biggest reasons for this is down to the amount of zone 2 work I've been doing.

The longer, slower runs or bike sessions have built up the engine.

There's been less time lifting weights and more time focused on this and conditioning work - I've done a lot of compromised running.

Communicate Like Your Life Depends On It

Kieran and I ran through a full simulation of the event 2 weeks ago, clocking in at 1 hour and 3 minutes.

The most important part of it all was constantly updating each other with how we were feeling.

"What's your heart rate?"

"I'll take over in 2 more reps."

"Is this pace good?"

"I'm recovered, I'm ready to swap."

It's so critical we do this throughout to keep us moving at the pace we want to go at.

Visualise

This is something I've done for a while before big events.

The night before I like to write down my thoughts and walk through the event in my head and how I want to tackle it.

This was something Jordan Kane mentioned when we recorded this podcast together.

It's such a powerful tool and gives you an extra layer of preparation so you can see any problems that might arise and pre-empt your response.
